Etiquette experts explained when tipping is acceptable and when it is not necessary.
SAN DIEGO — Has tipping gotten out of control? Many Americans believe this is the case. Some said they felt pressured to tip.
This is happening as more and more businesses are setting up digital payment methods. The problem has consumers asking: how much is too much?
tip inflation
The phenomenon is called “tipplation”. It is the term used to describe tipping requirements at the checkout.
“We live in an era of inflation, but on top of that we have tips everywhere – tip inflation. I’ll take it a step further and call it a tip invasion. Because that’s really what I think,” said etiquette expert Thomas Farley with Mister Manner.
Consumers everywhere said they were tired of leaving tips, even when it appeared that no service was actually provided.
“If they’re just getting paid hourly and they’re right behind the counter and giving you something and doing their job, I don’t think it deserves much more than what they’re already being paid for,” said consumer Gresham Veazey.
“I think the tipping at every corner is definitely out of control,” Farley added.
According to Farley, part of the problem is that most companies now have a virtual tipping jar, which has made tipping workers easier than ever. He says consumers shouldn’t feel pressured to tip.
“I think just because technology allows a company to do something or an entity to do something, doesn’t mean they should do it. What happens is what I like to call ‘guilt tipping’. So we know a guilt trip. This is the clue to guilt. Because you know that ultimately you have to turn the screen to the person waiting and who’s going to see how much you’ve given,” Farley said. “Not to mention the three people behind you in line to see what you typed.”
“When you have someone above you or in front of you, you feel a rush of time to actually act quickly,” added etiquette expert Lisa Gache, founder and CEO of Beverly Hills Manners.
This is because the minimum wage in San Diego has risen to $16.30. It’s now $15.50 nationwide.
“The minimum wage is already higher here than anywhere else… I’m originally from Kentucky and I think our minimum wage is still $7.25… so getting paid almost double that and asking for a tip on top of that – where else is that supposed to happen stop? ?” said Veazey.
Farley says not only has it gone too far, but he fears it’s getting worse.
“I think the damage that can be done by suddenly tipping every service professional in our lives, the people who would traditionally tip and demand that tip…they’re going to get a smaller piece of the pie,” he added added.
Etiquette experts said it’s important to continue tipping service workers, including waiters, drivers, salon attendants and others.
It’s up to you to decide if you want to leave a tip at the cash register. If you’re not interested in adding a tip, you can try paying with cash instead.
