A Viking Burial is a side quest favor in God of War Ragnarok that can only be unlocked after completing the main storyline. This side mission acts as the true end of the game as the screen turns black upon completion and the credits roll.

In this guide, we explain everything you need to know about how to get started on the true end-side quest, and what the final cutscene could mean for the future of the series.

How to unlock and start the true ending in God of War Ragnarok

After finishing the main storyline and leaving Hoddmimis Holt, Mimir will mention that Lunda informed him that there is a gathering in honor of Brok’s memory at Raeb’s tavern in Svartalfheim.

With that entry, travel to Svartalfheim – the nearest Mystic Gateway is the Nidavellir Gate. Once you arrive, follow the winding path to the door of the tavern and enter.

As soon as you arrive, you’ll find Raeb, Durlin and Lunda sharing their fondest memories of Brok over a drink. After their conversation, they’ll encourage you to pay your respects to Brok, whose body is lying across a nearby table. When they pay you respect, they will tell you that they will soon say their last goodbye to Brok at Sverd Sands – a small island at the end of the ferry closest to the prison of the pretender Tyr.

Meet the party at the Sverd Sands

Once you’re done, exit through the same door you entered and return to the Mystic Gateway at the bottom of the trail – you’ll want to travel to the Aurvangar Wetlands Gateway.

On arrival, follow the path in front of you and turn left, where you will soon reach the ferry, which you will want to communicate with to reach Sverd Sands.

Once the ferry pulls up, join the group as they line the water’s edge ahead and interact with Brok’s body to trigger a long cutscene.

This cutscene shows you how Kratos carries Brok to the funeral pyre, where you begin the burial process.

However, Sindri will soon arrive and say a final goodbye to his brother.

After sending him into the ocean, Sindri will make Freya light her arrow with his torch, in which she will then set fire to the pyre.

With Sindri visibly upset, Kratos tries to comfort him; however, his sympathy is rebuffed with a long look, before walking away and switching between the realms.

After the cutscene, the game goes black, the credits begin to roll, and the final theme song, “Blood Upon the Snow,” plays.

Secret Ending Explained – What it could mean for the future

So you’re probably wondering what the meaning is behind this ending and why this quest in particular ends with the game fading to black and a second set of credits rolling.

While it’s all just speculation at this point, as nothing has been officially confirmed yet, we can only assume that given the heavy focus on Sindri’s disdain for both Kratos and Atreus, all the way to the story’s final scene, it’s fair to assume Sindri’s hatred for the couple and apparent guilt for Brok’s death may spark a major plot point in the series’ future.

In Ragnarok, we’ve seen Sindri slowly transform from a caring, brother-like figure in Atreus to a broken, hate-filled man struggling with the grief of losing his brother. Factor in the fact that Brok’s death was at the hands of a man trying to find Atreus and that he never confronted Brok and shared his reasoning for bringing him back from the dead – despite the consequences – it’s clear that this was Santa Monica Studios planning all along.

Sindri’s demise is seen throughout the game, especially towards the end, as we see firsthand the difference in his physical appearance. Not only is he visually much less put together and appears fatigued, but his germaphobe nature seems to seemingly disappear as he still wears the same outfit, covered in Brok’s blood.

In addition, Sindri’s demise and possible future is teased by Durlin at Sverd Sands as he tells Lunda that “loss can do something to a man.” Mimir also confirms this after the funeral scene, where he says, “A hole… gets bigger the more you take away.”

If this wasn’t the direction they planned to go, we’d think it’s safe to assume they’d close Sindri’s story with a better conclusion – whether that means he’d forgive the couple over time or that he at least doesn’t blame them for Brok’s death.

That said, this isn’t the first time Santa Monica Studios has led us astray, as heading into Ragnarok we thought the game would focus on Freya’s hatred for Kratos, with her eventually playing a major villainous role. However, that plot point did not play out as we assumed and was quickly cleared up in the early chapters of the story.

Whether we just think too deeply about Sindri’s emotions or not, we feel like his story is far from over and feels very different from Freya’s hatred, especially considering how close Sindri was to Atreus and Kratos. While we don’t believe he’ll play the role of the big bad guy, he could take on a more vicious or reckless role if he lets his grief cloud his judgment.
