God of War Ragnarok offers companions other than Atreus, but exploring the Nine Realms with the son of Kratos is the best way to experience the game.
Although the mythical action game has other powerful companions, the world of War god Ragnarok is best explored by the father-son duo of Kratos and Atreus. While those of 2018 God of war if the two heroes traveled together almost all the way through, the sequel splits the duo up at several points. Other War god Ragnarok companions may be more effective in combat, but Atreus remains the best travel partner as players travel the Nine Realms.

Kratos and Atreus are a truly unstoppable duo, but some feel Freya is a better companion due to her intense combat skills. As she begins the game as an enemy, Freya and Kratos eventually join forces War god Ragnarok and she becomes his permanent companion after the end of the game. Freya possesses the same magical archery skills as Atreus, but she also supplements this arsenal with powerful Valkyrie attacks and plant-based magic. Her Vanir abilities allow her to poison enemies to devastating effect, and she can also cause the Bifrost status effect to rapidly deplete their health. However, Atreus still remains the best War god Ragnarok companion.
GoW Ragnarok is more emotional with Atreus
While some side content is meant to be experienced alongside Freya, many of the in-game events and conversations are better with Atreus. God of War Atreus changed the series in 2018 and it just feels right to explore the Nine Realms with the young demigod at Kratos’ side. Atreus’ presence also leads to emotional and personal conversations between the father-son duo, with Kratos telling Atreus about his brother Deimos in one quest and embracing their time together in another. Freya can stir up some very emotional moments during specific missions, but many events don’t coincide with her and have more meaning with Atreus as a companion.
Atreus’s experience matches God Of War Ragnarok
Instead of waiting to explore with Freya during the endgame, you conquer the world of War god Ragnarok early with Atreus can also be beneficial for gameplay. By completing favors and exploring the Nine Realms, you can earn items and experience for both Kratos and Atreus, which can be a huge advantage during later parts of the game. GoW Ragnaroks Atreus sections make the agile archer playable, so battling monsters and collecting items with him as a companion will make the player significantly more powerful during these levels. Freya also gains experience when serving as a companion to Kratos, but her abilities have less impact as she never transitions into a full-fledged playable god.
Although Freya is an incredibly powerful Vanir goddess, War god Ragnarok is more fun to explore with Atreus on the side of Kratos. Having the father-son duo together leads to many emotional and heartfelt moments, which are made even more poignant by the game’s ending. The War god Ragnarok Atreus’s gameplay twist also makes exploring with Atreus more effective, as abilities unlocked as a companion carry over as a playable hero. The Valkyrie Queen is certainly a formidable ally for Kratos and the player, but traveling with Atreus just feels more natural.
